FOILING with FUSERS

TURN BLACK PRINT INTO METALLIC COLOUR
FOR USE WITH PHOTOCOPIED OR LASER PRINTED DOCUMENTS

Tonertex foil can be used to transform black print into metallic colour with the aid of a laminator – see instructions below. We no longer supply foil fusers and laminators, as machines can now be purchased for under £100. There are just a few remaining Foiling Wands, which are now being discontinued, and you can pick up a bargain here. We do not endorse any particular brands of laminators and results may vary on different machines. You normally have to experiment a bit in the beginning with heat settings (start on the lowest) and some machines require you to use a carrier too. Regular users who have had positive experiences with their machines, please do share them with other crafters in the comments section below 🙂

Here are the basic techniques for applying Tonertex foil using a laminator and below are top tips and troubleshooting assistance.  Full instructions and more techniques are on our 2 hour DVD (free download on purchases over £35).

1. Your document must be produced on a photocopier or laser printer.  Always pre-test. You may need to adjust these settings for different papers and machines.

BEST RESULTS are achieved on smooth papers. Recycled and inkjet papers absorb a lot of toner and do not give even results.

2. Cut the Tonertex™ Foil and lay it colourside up, over the printed area. Secure a re-positionable sticker on one end of the foil to hold it to the paper (see below to purchase). Make sure that if you have multiple pieces of foil that the stickers are all at the same end.

3. Feed the document into the machine, sticker end first.

In the rare case of a misfeed, you can press the reverse function on the machine.

4. Peel back the Tonertex™ Foil. Your print has now transformed into a metallic colour!

Your leftovers can be re-cycled with our Write ‘n’ Rub Pen and PS Fabric adhesives.

TOP TIPS

1) Feed foil through machine in direction of your roll, this will prevent rippling.

2) Pre-test foiled stationary before printing on a laser printer. Our Tonertex™ foils have a good resistance to a second heat process, as they were developed for textiles, however printers vary and it is essential to satisfy yourselves before proceeding.

3) Adjust the settings on the machine only for the thickness of your paper or card. You may need to experiment to find the correct setting for your job. Some laminators need a carrier sheet which will come with the machine.

TROUBLESHOOTING

“The foil has got caught in the machine”. This can occur if the foil is not secured down at the beginning of the print, as instructed. To remove DO NOT POKE IN THE MACHINE WITH SHARP INSTRUMENTS – THIS CAN DAMAGE YOUR MACHINE, but allow the machine to run and keep feeding blank paper through it. The lost piece will eventually work it’s way out.

“The foil leaves flecks around the print area. What can I do?” This is from recycling Tonertex™ Foils. The first time you transfer, the foil picks up tiny flecks of toner. If it is reheated, it will transfer them again. However leftover can be used with our Write ‘n’ Rub Foiling Pen and Pressure Sensitive Adhesives.

“How can I use Tonertex™ Foil onto fabric?” Toner will fuse to some fabrics, generally ones that have at least a 50% synthetic content. You will need to use Lazertrans™ Transfer Paper. Pre-test beforehand. Alternatively, use our PS Fabric Adhesives. These work on all fabrics and are fully washable. Details and instructions on the Fashion & Fabric page .

“Can I foil onto half tones?” Yes. Unlike conventional hot foiling, Tonertex™ Foil sticks to half tone prints.

“On my half tones and small text, the foil is left in some of the letter” To remove infil, dab over the text with a piece of BluTac. This will remove excess foil, but not your print.

“I’ve managed to get some sticky bits caught in my machine” Clean the machine by feeding it with silicone paper, available from good stationary suppliers. You can make your own by spraying paper with WD40 and allowing it to dry, then feeding it through the machine.

repositionable_labels

These labels have a special backing of a lightweight adhesive that will NOT stick to the paper or foil after it has been through the heat process. They were specially made for Tonertex Foils with an adhesive that will not damage the foils.

The sheets are A4 and there are 65 labels per sheet. They are compatible with Avery L7651.

Ref: L7651 – 8 sheets = 520 re-positionable labels – £2.00
